Zipline tours in Iceland carry you in a harness over canyons, rivers, and waterfalls. Guided courses run in South Iceland near Hveragerdi and Vik, and in North Iceland in the town of Akureyri.
Guides fit every rider with a harness, helmet, and the rest of the safety gear. Depending on the course, guides welcome children from age 6, so ziplining suits families as well as travelers looking for adventure tours in Iceland.
Most zipline tours near Reykjavik start at Mega Zipline Iceland at Arholmar in Hveragerdi, about 30 miles (49 kilometers) from the capital. Its two parallel lines, each about 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) long, run above Svartagljufur Canyon toward the Reykjadalsa river.
Families with younger children can also ride the zipline on the ropes course at Adrenalin Adventure Park in Nesjavellir.
2-Hour Zipline Tour with Conventional and Superman Rides in Hveragerdi: Ride both lines, first seated and then head-first. The Superman ride reaches up to 75 miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour).
40-Minute Zipline Tour over South Iceland from Hveragerdi, Standard Ticket: Fly the seated line at a relaxed speed you can partly control. A shuttle drives you up the canyon before a short walk to the launch tower.
40-Minute Zipline Tour over South Iceland from Hveragerdi, Superman Ticket: Fly the line on your belly with your arms in front. Speed goggles are included.
3-Hour Mega Zipline Superman Ride with Lava Tunnel Tour: Fly the Superman line, then drive about 20 minutes to a guided tour of the Raufarholshellir lava tunnel. The tunnel runs nearly 4,462 feet (1,360 meters) underground.
Zipline Tour in Hveragerdi with Transfers from Reykjavik: Ride the seated line with round-trip transfers from BSI Bus Terminal. The trip takes about 3.25 hours, with roughly 40 minutes at the zipline.
Mega Zipline Adventure Tour in Hveragerdi from Reykjavik: Ride the seated line, with pairs able to fly side by side. Bus transfers from Reykjavik are included.
Family-Friendly 2-Hour Climbing Excursion at Adrenalin Adventure Park: Climb about 50 obstacles at heights of 3, 16, and 33 feet (1, 5, and 10 meters), then ride the course’s zipline. Children from age 6 can join.
The South Coast offers zipline tours over a canyon near Vik and on Solheimajokull Glacier. The glacier ziplines run all year, so they suit winter visitors too.
Zipline Adventure in Vik with Guided Canyon Hike: Hike through Grafargil Canyon between four lines, with the last one passing over Hundafoss Waterfall. The longest line measures 787 feet (240 meters).
Zipline and Glacier Hiking Tour on Solheimajokull: Hike the glacier in crampons with a certified guide, then ride a zipline on the ice. Groups stay at 12 people or fewer, and five personal photos are included.
Private Solheimajokull Glacier Tour with Hiking and Zipline Experience in Iceland: Book the same glacier hike and zipline as a private tour for up to 10 people. Five personal photos per person are included.
Ultimate Solheimajokull Glacier Tour with Hiking, Ice Caving, and Glacier Ziplining: Explore a natural ice cave during your glacier hike, then ride the zipline on this private winter tour for up to 12 people. Each guest receives 10 professional photos.
North Iceland’s zipline course runs through Glerargil Gorge in the town of Akureyri. On the Zipline in Akureyri tour, you fly five lines that zigzag over the Glera river and its cliffs. The 1.5- to 2-hour course includes about 2 miles (3 kilometers) of walking on uneven forest paths.
Minimum ages for zipline tours in Iceland start at 6 at Adrenalin Adventure Park and 8 in Vik and Akureyri. Hveragerdi takes riders from age 9. The glacier ziplines on Solheimajokull welcome riders from age 10.
Weight limits apply on every course so the harness fits safely. Riders in Hveragerdi must weigh 66 to 265 pounds (30 to 120 kilograms), and riders in Vik 66 to 242 pounds (30 to 110 kilograms).
Travelers under 18 join the Vik course with an adult. Check the limits on your chosen listing before booking, since they differ between operators.
Most zipline tours in Iceland run from May to October, when hiking trails are free of snow. Long summer daylight also gives you more departure times to choose from.
The ziplines on Solheimajokull Glacier run all year, so winter visitors can still fly. The Akureyri course runs rain or shine, so pack waterproof layers in any season.
Wear warm, waterproof layers and sturdy shoes or hiking boots, since most courses involve walking between lines. Gloves and a thin hat that fits under the helmet keep you warm at speed.
Tie back long hair before your first ride. Hveragerdi also provides goggles for the Superman ride.
Hveragerdi’s zipline fits easily into a day on the Golden Circle or the South Coast. Vik and Solheimajokull Glacier lie further east, close to the black sand beaches and waterfalls of the South Coast.
A night at one of the hotels in South Iceland puts the Hveragerdi, Vik, and Solheimajokull courses within reach of your base. Pair your ride with glacier hiking tours in Iceland or a visit to the Raufarholshellir lava tunnel for a full adventure day.
