Description
Hike on Solheimajokull Glacier on the South Coast of Iceland with a certified guide and all the safety gear you need. No glacier hiking experience is needed.
The tour starts at the base camp at the foot of Solheimajokull, by the parking lot. Solheimajokull is an outlet glacier of Myrdalsjokull, one of the largest ice caps in Iceland, and its accessible slopes make it a good place for glacier hiking.
Your guide fits you with a harness, helmet, and crampons, gives you an ice axe, and briefs you on the equipment and the route. Then you walk around the glacier lagoon to the ice.
On the glacier, you see white snow veined with black ash from past eruptions, blue ice, icicles, ice walls, deep crevasses, and sometimes even ice caves. The colors change with the seasons.
As you hike, you can refill your water bottle from fresh meltwater streams.
The higher you go, the wider the views. In clear weather, you can see mountains, the Westman Islands, the black sand of the South Coast, and lava fields.
Your guide tells you how glaciers form and why Iceland has so many, explains the threats they face and how you can help protect them, and can take photos of your group along the way.
At the end of the hike, you return to the parking lot.
